When the sediment interface speaks in colors: revealing a 2D biogeochemical world

This event will be dedicated to exploring biogeochemical processes in sediments in two dimensions at the sub-millimetre scale using 2D DET gels (Diffusive Equilibrium in Thin film) coupled with colorimetric methods and hyperspectral imaging.

The AAS is organised by students from the  Biology, Ecology and Evolution (BEE) Masters program, specialising in Marine Environments, Anthropisation and Diagnosis (MAD) at the University of Angers, and researchers from the LPG. It will take place from November 09 to 13, 2026 at the Faculty of Science of the Université d’Angers.

This training school is based on a program combining fieldwork, scientific presentations and practical workshops (flyer attached). It will offer participants a unique opportunity to discover and experiment with cutting-edge 2D mapping techniques for sediment and soil porewater solutes, including alkalinity, nitrate/nitrite, phosphate, dissolved iron and manganese, sulfide, and pH. Based on 2D DET (Diffusive Equilibrium in Thin Films) gels, colorimetric methods, and hyperspectral imaging. These techniques provide high-resolution visualization of chemical gradients and allow the quantification of organic matter remineralization processes in heterogeneous environments. Particular attention will be given to the influence of biological structures such as plant roots and macrofaunal burrows on sediment and soil chemistry.

Designed for Master’s students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, researchers, and environmental professionals, the Autumn School offers a unique opportunity to develop practical expertise while interacting with internationally recognized specialists. The methodologies presented are particularly relevant to researchers investigating carbon cycling, organic matter remineralization in soils and sediments, making the event especially valuable for the FairCarboN community.
